Hub New Music, a critically acclaimed musical group called “contemporary chamber trailblazers” by the Boston Globe, will perform compositions created by University of Houston Moores School of Music students and lead masterclasses for students in flute, clarinet, violin and cello during a weeklong residency this month.
The group will also perform a new piece by Tyshawn Sorey, a well-known avant-garde composer and instrumentalist who will also be in residence at UH, that was co-commissioned by the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.

McGovern College of the Arts. “In alignment with the Mitchell Center's mission to provide innovative visiting artists to campus, Hub's residency provides a unique experience for students. Their dedication to empowering future generations of artists will leave a lasting legacy of innovation and inspiration that resonates beyond our campus.”
On Feb. 14, the group will perform music inspired by artworks in Blaffer’s “Intimate confession is a project” exhibit, featuring pieces by student composers Hossein Aminzadeh, Luke Brinkley, Eric Estrada Valdez, Evan Kunkel, Jaime Morales, Larry Penna and Benjamin Petree. It’s part of a collaboration between the Cynthia Woods Mitchel Center for the Arts and Blaffer Art Museum called Convergence Research, a platform for experimentation and research of all disciplines in the McGovern College of the Arts with the goal of creating more opportunities for connection between the disciplines.
Hub New Music will close its residency on Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Moores Opera House with a performance featuring the world premiere of Sorey’s piece “For Alvin Singleton” along with new works by composers Angélica Negrón, Nico Muhly and Nina C. Young.
Founded in 2013, Hub New Music has grown into an international touring ensemble that collaborates with today’s most celebrated composers. Hub has previously been in residence with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, working with 10 outstanding high school aged composers, and has been a guest at some of the country’s leading institutions, including Princeton University, the University of Michigan, the University of Texas and the University of Southern California.
